March 19, 2019, New Milford, N.J. - Hovnanian School is pleased to announce that it has been granted first-time accreditation from the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools (NJAIS). The NJAIS Accreditation Program is one of a select few accreditation programs recognized at the international level through the International Council Advancing Independent School Accreditation.
Over the course of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years, co-chairs Stamatia PaxosBrandt, English Language Arts teacher (ELA, Nursery and Pre Kindergarten), and Houri Kalachian, English and Homeroom (3rd grade), led the faculty, staff and Board of Trustees of Hovnanian School through the rigorous self-study and reflection, which included a three-day onsite visit from the NJAIS Accreditation Visiting Team.
As part of the NJAIS accreditation, the school received the following major commendations:
“A multilingual program where learning takes place in many languages and creating a positive learning environment where students can flourish. The Visiting Team witnessed students proud of their abilities to speak different languages; this is a real strength of the school and a strong asset to the students.”
“A nurturing and caring educational environment responding to the global needs of the children.”
“Dedicated and qualified teachers, who love the children, and enthusiastically participate in planning the selection of material, and review of the curriculum.”
“A variety of communication methods that meet the needs of all of the school’s constituencies.”
“A highly engaged and committed Parent Teacher Organization.”
“The establishment and growth of the Child Care Center” (for babies 6 weeks to 24 months old).
“A commitment to environmentalism and going ‘green.’”
The Visiting Team also noted that that “it is obvious that the Armenian culture is alive and being preserved [at Hovnanian School]” and that the school’s mission clearly comes through “…in the interactions between students and faculty, in its stellar dual-language curriculum, during Project Time, on the 8th grade trip to Armenia, and in the number of alumni who return to the school with their children or to work, to name but a few ways. The school has shown in its words and actions a strong commitment to the education, health, and well-being of each of its students and, in many ways, their families.”
“Earning accreditation is confirmation that Hovnanian School provides a quality educational experience based on exemplary programs and curricula that address the academic, physical, social, and emotional development of our children. What makes me proudest is the way the entire community, under the guidance and leadership of the Steering Committee, joined forces to show the NJAIS visiting team what a treasure our school is. Along with the connections to and association with elite independent schools, the introspection and reflection this process has provided will continue to guide us in the future” said Principal and Head of School Shakeh Tashjian.
NJAIS is a nonprofit association of independent schools throughout New Jersey. Founded in 1958, NJAIS has 87 member-schools and has been accrediting schools since 1995.
Hovnanian School is also accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
